April 10, 2006

The Full Story

Legendary Jamaican singer, songwriter and actor, Jimmy Cliff, was the special guest of the Theatre Royal Stratford East, London, for the opening of the stage musical based on the seminal Jamaican film: ‘The Harder They Come’.
The musical, which opened last week to rave reviews, features all the songs from the original film, many of which were written by Cliff.
On opening night, Cliff, who played the lead role in the 1972 film, took the stage to perform the eponymous theme song, to shouts and screams of approval from the packed theatre.
The Harder They Come tells the story of Ivan, an innocent Jamaican country boy, who travels to the big city of Kingston to find fame and fortune as a reggae star. Young British actor, Rolan Bell, is playing the part of Ivan, which was made famous by Cliff over 30 years earlier.
Much like the movie, which reached a worldwide audience, the musical is proving to be a huge hit, and is playing to capacity audiences every night.
