Public Education Officer at the Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB), Emeleo Ebanks, is urging motorists to prioritise regular vehicle servicing as a critical step in reducing the risk of fires.
He said routine maintenance of vehicles is strongly recommended, stressing that warning signs, such as the smell of fuel, should never be ignored.
“Once you smell fuel, pull over, shut the vehicle down and do a visual check,” he told JIS News, cautioning that individuals should avoid any actions that could create sparks, including tampering with the battery.
Mr. Ebanks further warned that fuel vapours are highly flammable and that normal vehicle operations, including restarting the engine, can trigger a fire when a leak is present.
“When you turn that key, the starter gives a spark, and that in itself can start a fire,” he cautioned.
Mr. Ebanks also highlighted that similar safety precautions must be observed in the home, particularly in spaces where cooking gas is used.
He advised that occupants who detect the smell of gas should avoid operating electrical switches and instead ventilate the area by carefully opening doors and windows.
The Jamaica Fire Brigade continues to encourage the public to remain vigilant and to take prompt, appropriate action whenever potential fire hazards are identified.
