Public Education Officer, Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB), Superintendent Emeleo Ebanks, explains the importance of installing smoke-detection devices within homes, at a recent JIS Think Tank.

The Full Story

The Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB) is encouraging householders to install smoke detectors to minimise fire-related injuries and deaths.

The appeal comes amid increased household activities such as cooking and the use of decorative lights that heighten the risk of fires during the festive season.

“Every room in your house, except the kitchen, should have a smoke detector,” said Public Education Officer at the JFB, Superintendent Emeleo Ebanks, at a recent JIS Think Tank.

He said that householders may choose to buy a simple battery-operated smoke detector for their space.

“It comes with a nine-volt battery [and] two-side tape. You peel the tape off and you stick it in the centre of the ceiling,” Superintendent Ebanks explained, adding that the devices are relatively inexpensive.

Superintendent Ebanks pointed out that the smoke detector will give off about 90 decibels of noise, a sound that is loud enough to alert you in an emergency, even if you are in another room or if you are sleeping.

“The whiff of smoke from a cigarette will get it going and it will awaken persons in the house. So, we always recommend that you have detection devices in your homes,” he said.

Once installed, householders are advised to routinely test the devices to ensure they remain in proper working condition throughout the season and beyond.
