The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) has established a base camp in Haiti from which all Caricom donations and aid staff are being dispatched. The United Nations is the leading international support on the ground and the JDF is included in daily morning meetings at their headquarters and will play a role in the relief efforts as required.
This was reported by Minister of Information, Hon. Daryl Vaz, during a press conference at Jamaica House in Kingston this afternoon (January 15 ).
JDF Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Stewart Saunders said that donations from Jamaica have already entered distribution channels and that the JDF was in constant contact with Haitian authorities.
Major General Saunders also noted that the Jamaican relief efforts were in no way a burden on Haiti as they were self contained. The base camp is supporting relief efforts of the Caribbean Disaster Response Agency (CDEMA), which is an agency of Caricom.
