The Full Story

Domestic disputes and interpersonal conflicts have emerged as the leading causes of murders in Westmoreland, prompting the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) to intensify conflict resolution interventions across the parish.

Operations Officer for the Division, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Jordaine Allen, said the shift marks a notable change in serious crimes.

He noted that the Division is strengthening collaboration with stakeholders to promote mediation and reduce tensions before they escalate.

“We are asking all stakeholders to continue to work with us as we try to see how best we can help citizens through some mediation, [and] conflict resolution to see if they can solve their disputes in a more amicable manner,” he said.

DSP Allen was speaking during the recent monthly meeting of the Westmoreland Municipal Corporation in Savanna-la-Mar.

He also pointed to available support services as critical to the intervention strategy.

“We have been blessed again to have the Domestic Violence Centre where we can refer persons to that facility… and for us to do some intervention,” he noted.

He also urged citizens to make use of the resource where necessary.

“If these situations, you are aware of them, we have that centre to also assist persons with domestic issues,” DSP Allen added.

The Operations Officer also highlighted ongoing efforts to shape behaviour from an early age through targeted school interventions.

“We have our SRO (School Resource Officer) programme where we send trained police officers to interact with the deans of discipline [and] also the children in school,” DSP Allen informed.

He noted that the initiative is aimed at preventing future criminal behaviour by engaging young people early.
