The Full Story

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) is set to showcase an all-woman drill display at Grand Gala, which will be held on Independence Day, August 6, at the national stadium.

It is part of the many activities to mark the 75th anniversary of women being able to serve in the JCF.

Head of the JCF’s Corporate Communications Unit (CCU), Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Stephanie Lindsay said the display will highlight the many milestones of women in the organisation.

“Some of the things that women are doing in the Force, how far we have come as an organisation, and the contributions that women have been making, there will be some drill displays that I am sure the audience will be very excited about,” she told JIS News.

She added that the drill will be choreographed to mark the different milestones along “this journey, and it is something that persons would want to come out and see. The women of the JCF will be on show”.

SSP Lindsay noted that the integration of women in the Force, has been a high point of growth and development for many of its members, and that a lot of them are leading many departments in the organisation.

“The contribution that women have made over the years, is very significant, and there is no department in the Force that a female is not part of,” she stated.

Recently, the JCF promoted three female Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs).

Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Karina Powell-Hood is the highest ranked female member of the Force. Retired Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Jevene Bent was the first female to rise to a DCP.

She was followed by retired DCP, Novelette Grant who also acted as Commissioner.

Retired SSP Lola Evans is the only female officer to have commanded the then Mobile Reserve Division, while retired Superintendent of Police, Ionie Ramsay Nelson was the first woman motorcyclist to join the JCF. She also headed the Constabulary Communications Network (CCN).

“It shows that we are not gender specific in how we carry out our functions, and we have at least four women who are members of the Commissioner rank. That is a significant milestone,” SSP Lindsay said.
