The Full Story

PORT ANTONIO — Eleven dance groups form Portland and St. Mary participated in the Port Maria leg of eliminations for the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) sponsored, World Reggae Dance Championship, at the car park of the Hi Lo Supermarket on Friday (June 17).

The event, attended by a large crowd, was the first to be held in this year’s competition, with others scheduled to follow in Ocho Rios and Montego Bay.

The groups are; Uprising Dancers, 7x Dancers, Team Link Dancers, One Plus Dancers, Supreme Dancers, Flex Squad Dancers, Fire Vibes Dancers, LX Ravas Dancers, H.Q Dancers and Street Squad Dancers, all of which delighted the audience with expressions of popular dancing.

Their performances are currently being assessed by a panel of judges. The winner will go on to contest the semi-finals in Kingston on July 8.

Speaking to the Jamaica Information Service (JIS) during the event, Coordinator for the World Reggae Dance Championship, Juliet Cowan-Morgan, commended the groups for participating in the competition and praised them for the outstanding quality of their performances.

She said interested groups which missed the opportunity to participate in the Port Maria eliminations, can still enter the competition at other locations, as the objective of the competition is to unearth and expose the talent of young Jamaicans.

Asserting that it was obvious that a great deal of work was done to prepare the groups for the elimination, Mrs. Cowan said their performances were a strong indication of the outstanding talents of young Jamaicans.
