JCDC FIWI Short Film Competition Screening On Oct. 21

The date for the FiWi Short Film Competition screening has been extended to Monday, October 21, 2024, due to the projected inclement weather conditions.
The time and venue of the event will be announced shortly.
At the event, patrons will be able to view short films submitted by 17 finalists of the competition, which is organised by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) of the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport.
The films will be showed on a big screen and attendance is free of charge.
The budding film-makers have submitted three to five-minute films based on the following Jamaican proverbs: ‘Sweet mout fly follow coffin go a hole’; ‘Puss nuh hab han, but him tek him foot fi wipe him face’; ‘Keep clear a ole house, les dem fall down pon you’; ‘Rockstone a riber bottom no feel sun hot’ and ‘Finger tink, yu cyaan cut eh trow ‘way’.
Entrants also used special themes, including ‘Need a passport quick, Get it with just a click’ and ‘SEAS IN FOCUS: Uniting for marine managed areas.’
This is the fourth year of the staging of the competition which started in 2021.
Drama and Theatre Development Specialist at the JCDC, Shaun Drysdale, told JIS News that the JCDC has decided to host a screening of the films on a big screen prior to the awards ceremony, which will take place later this month.
“We want to have a screening before the awards ceremony so we can have more persons physically there to view these wonderful amateur Jamaican films and we [get to] see their expressions and engage them in real time,” he said.
Mr. Drysdale said at the screening, persons would be able to select their winner for the Viewer’s Choice Award.
Following the screening, he said that the finalists’ films will be uploaded to the various JCDC social media channels, to allow the public to share their comments and vote for their favourite short film.
“We would still have the films on social media, and this is how we will get our Viewer’s Choice Award. So, this award wouldn’t be determined by our judges, it would be determined by the number of likes and views,” he said.
