The Jamaica Customs Agency (JCA) is advising its clients and stakeholders that operations at its Queen’s 230 Warehouse, located on Spanish Town Road, Kingston, have been suspended until further notice.

This closure is primarily due to the possible release of a hazardous material in the stripping section of the facility, on Monday, November 9, 2015.

Following reports of the possible release, the Occupational Health and Safety Unit of the JCA made immediate contact with the relevant Agencies, such as the Ministry of Health, the Jamaica Fire Brigade and the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA), to ensure swift investigation into the matter.

The Jamaica Fire Brigade visited the facility yesterday and took precautionary steps, which included air testing and cornering off the facility.

Teams from the NEPA, Jamaica Fire Brigade and the Ministry of Health are today (Tuesday, November 10), carrying out further assessment at the facility.

Employees, who were directly exposed, have received medical attention and all employees assigned to the Unit have been relocated to the JCA’s head office.

The JCA is urging our clients and stakeholders, to exercise understanding and patience as a result of the closure of the Queen’s 230 Warehouse, noting that the health and safety of our employees and the public whom we serve, must take precedence above all else.

The facility will return to its normal operations, once the JCA receives clearance from the relevant Agencies engaged in assessment, investigation and mitigation.
