JBDC Encourages Large Corporations to Mentor MSMEs
January 21, 2025The Full Story
The Jamaica Business Development Corporation (JBDC) is encouraging large corporations to play an integral role in strengthening the country’s business ecosystem by mentoring micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).
As Jamaica’s premier business development support agency, the JBDC provides a comprehensive range of services, including advisory support, training and access to market information.
However, mentorship presents an unparalleled advantage, offering real-world insights to help MSMEs navigate the challenges of business ownership and growth.
It is for this reason that Manager of the JBDC’s Business Advisory Services Unit, Melissa Barrett, invites “big businesses” to leverage their experience and expertise to guide and support emerging entrepreneurs.
Currently, MSMEs often experience challenges such as limited access to capital, marketing constraints, operational inefficiencies and regulatory compliance issues.
“Mentorship can help bridge these gaps by equipping MSMEs with the knowledge to develop sound financial strategies, explore funding opportunities and manage cash flow effectively,” Ms. Barrett said.
She also emphasised that mentorship is a two-way street, benefiting both mentors and mentees.
“By engaging in mentorship, large businesses can share invaluable expertise that supports the success of MSMEs, while also contributing to the overall economic development of the community,” the Manager pointed out.
Additionally, mentors can gain access to fresh perspectives, innovative ideas and opportunities to expand their professional networks.
To facilitate these connections between MSMEs and industry leaders, the JBDC has established strategic partnerships and developed its Accelerator Programme, which focuses on Access to Finance and provides participants with training, mentorship, networking and financing opportunities.
Individuals or businesses interested in becoming mentors or participating in the JBDC’s programmes are encouraged to visit www.jbdc.net or call 876-928-5161-5 to schedule an appointment with a Business Development Officer.
Established in April 2001, the Jamaica Business Development Corporation (JBDC) is mandated to facilitate the sustainable creation and development of MSMEs in Jamaica.
The agency is dedicated to fostering the sustainable growth of MSMEs through its Corporate Headquarters, Incubator and Resource Centre (IRC) and an islandwide network of Small Business Development Centres (SBDC).
Additionally, the JBDC operates a chain of Things Jamaican stores, offering clients access to a diverse range of business, technical, research and marketing services designed to drive entrepreneurial success.
