The Full Story

Farmers in St. Mary are to benefit from a marketing and processing centre, which is being set up by the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS) in the parish.
The facility will be established at the building once occupied by the now defunct Richmond Boxing Plant. The JAS, in February, signed a 25-year lease with the Commissioner of Lands for use of the property, said JAS Parish Manager for St. Mary, Lavon Murdock.
She told JIS News that the JAS was collaborating with the Jamaica Producers Group on the marketing and agro-processing project, and a new company, Jamaica Breadbasket Company, has been formed to manage the operation. The company comprises representatives of the JAS, the farming community in St. Mary and the Jamaica Producers Group.
Mrs. Murdock said that the JAS would be making every effort to involve as many farmers as possible in the project, noting that it would open up unlimited opportunities and possibilities for the St. Mary farming community.
The JAS Parish Manager further expressed the association’s full commitment to working with farmers to increase agricultural production in St. Mary, and was examining ways in which it could assist in the areas of land preparation, irrigation and the provision of chemicals and farming equipment.
