The Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS) will be receiving a donation of 500 breadfruit trees from Dr. Julius Garvey, son of National Hero, the Right Excellent Marcus Mosiah Garvey.
The trees are to be distributed to farmers and will also be planted at the Denbigh Showground in May Pen, Clarendon.
This was announced by JAS President, Senator Norman Grant, at the Denbigh Agricultural, Industrial and Food Show, on Emancipation Day, Saturday, August 1.
Senator Grant said Dr. Garvey’s donation represents the continuous commitment of the Garvey family to the agricultural sector.
One hundred and twenty of the breadfruit trees will be planted at the Denbigh showground.
The three-day annual agricultural show concluded on Sunday, August 2. This year’s event, under the theme ‘Grow what you Eat. Eat what you Grow. Making Agriculture Sustainable’, is reported to have had the biggest turnout of patrons in recent history.
The planting and commercialisation of fruit trees, and in particular breadfruit trees, has over the years been promoted by the Jamaican Government as a critical step towards a holistic approach to food security.
The nutritional value of the breadfruit is well documented. It can be used as a versatile base for many dishes and is a rich source of fibre, vitamin C and potassium.
