The Full Story

Jamaican Heads of Mission worldwide, will join the rest of the Foreign Ministry’s Executive Management this week (October 8-12) at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, New Kingston, for their 2018 Conference. The meetings will be held under the theme, “Diplomacy in an Era of Constant Change: Jamaica’s Response” and will address a wide range of policy and operational issues.

In addition to the meetings and panel discussions scheduled, Jamaica’s diplomats will be addressed by Prime Minister Andrew Holness and the Foreign Minister Senator Kamina Johnson Smith on Tuesday October 9.

“Our diplomats are often the first points of contact for business and trade opportunities, development projects and aid. It is therefore, very important that we meet to discuss and align ourselves as part of the Foreign Service, as well as to ensure that our Heads of Mission have the opportunity to hear first-hand and understand Government’s objectives and priorities for national development,” explained Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade.

Agenda items for the Conference include an analytical exchange on major international developments and their implications for Jamaica, Economic and Public Diplomacy, Consular Services, the implementation of the Foreign Trade Policy and Diaspora Policies. In that context the Diplomats will engage with senior members of the public and private sectors on ways in which Jamaica can make an effective response to emerging changes in the global arena.

On Friday, the diplomats will also tour the new Ministry building in downtown Kingston and visit the Caribbean Maritime University.

The 2018 Executive Management and Heads of Mission Conference is the first such meeting in seven years.
