Jamaicans should reflect on the country’s significant progress and journey as the nation celebrates 61 years of Independence.
Deputy Mayor of Montego Bay, Councillor Richard Vernon, made the plea as he addressed the St. James Independence Church Service, held at Kings Chapel United Pentecostal Church on Albion Road in Montego Bay, St. James, on Sunday (July 30).
Mr. Vernon said Jamaicans should take pride in the nation’s achievements, while acknowledging the importance of realising its full potential both as a country and as individuals.
“It is my hope that as a nation, we will use the occasion of Jamaica 61 to continue reflecting on our past and repositioning ourselves for a vibrant future, one that has God as the driver, leader and focus,” he added.
Mr. Vernon further stressed the significance of unity and collaboration in rebuilding Jamaica stronger than ever.
He pointed to the significant role of strong families in nation-building, drawing parallels between the foundation of great Sunday schools and great churches.
Mr. Vernon acknowledged the challenges faced by the nation, such as crime and violence as well as health concerns.
However, he encouraged everyone to give thanks for God’s goodness and mercies, which have sustained the nation through the difficult times.
“When the global winds change and push against our country, if the foundations of our families aren’t strong, we will be gone with the wind. We are a small nation with a big heart,” he said.
For his part, Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister (West), Hon. Homer Davis, indicated that despite Jamaica only being independent for 61 years, the country has achieved significant progress.
He credited the various leaders who have taken the nation through different stages of governance, where each Administration passed the baton to the next Administration to “continue to build this country”.
“I think that these occasions are occasions when our leaders should stand up and let the people who are looking upon us to lead know that we are leading in their best interest,” he noted.
The service was held under the theme ‘Jamaica 61 Proud and Strong’.
