Jamaicans are being encouraged to play an active role in guiding the country’s youth, in light of the rising incidence of violence in schools.
Deputy Mayor of Kingston, Councillor Winston Ennis, says the matter is one requiring a collective response by the society.
“There has been a rise in incidents of violence amongst youth in schools. It is sad when children can’t resolve their differences due to an apparent lack of proper guidance, support or other critical interventions…,” Councillor Ennis said.
He was addressing the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) monthly meeting at the Council’s offices in downtown Kingston, on Tuesday (October 11).
Mr. Ennis made a special appeal to Councillors to double their efforts in working with their respective communities to correct this social ill.
“I use this platform to appeal to all of us to pay greater attention to our youth, because as counsellors, we too have a major role to play in creating and maintaining a civil and respectful society,” he implored.
“Let us join hands and hearts together to find ways to make improvements in the lives of our children, so as to create an environment of understanding. Their issues can be amicably resolved,” the Deputy Mayor said.
