The Full Story

Prime Minister, Dr. the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, is appealing to Jamaicans at home and in the diaspora to give generously during today’s (November 23) six-hour I LOVE JAMAICA Telethon and Virtual Concert.

The national fundraising initiative, is aimed at supporting Jamaica’s recovery efforts, following the devastation caused by Category Five Hurricane Melissa on October 28.

“I invite you to give generously. Your contribution helps a child return to school, a family rebuild their home, and a community regain its rhythm. Together, we can restore the areas that have been affected and help our country rise from this moment with resilience, confidence and grace,” he said.

Within the first hour of the telethon, $3.5 million was donated.

The Prime Minister underscored that the telethon gives every Jamaican an opportunity to play a meaningful role in the national effort, as many of them want to help but cannot travel to the affected parishes.

“Through your contributions, you bring comfort to families, you help restore stability and you shine a light of hope into communities where people are waiting for relief. Every donation count,” Dr. Holness said.

The Prime Minister said families in Westmoreland, St. Elizabeth, Hanover, St. James, Trelawny, Manchester and St. Ann are facing immense challenges.

“Homes have been damaged, communities have been disrupted, and livelihoods have been shaken. More than 900,000 Jamaicans have felt the effects of this hurricane in one way or another. Today, their voices and their stories guide the purpose of this telethon,” he said.

In the weeks ahead, Dr. Holness said the Government will remain fully engaged in restoration and reconstruction.

“We are clearing debris, restoring utilities and supporting our citizens. The work will continue until every community is on a path to stability and renewal,” he said.
