Jamaicans Abroad Continue to Support Country

Consul General to New York, Dr. Basil Bryan has said that Jamaicans abroad, driven by their passion and love for the country, have continued to support their loved ones at home.
“The Jamaican, who lives outside of Jamaica, has a tremendous passion in his or her heart for Jamaica and it is that passion that drives the commitment to assist others so that we all can be a better people”, Dr. Bryan said.
The Consul General was speaking at a function held on Wednesday (Feb. 2) at the Hilton Hotel Kingston, to mark the 75th anniversary of Camperdown High school as well as to launch the school’s inaugural track meet.
Dr. Bryan, who is a past student of Camperdown, implored the teachers to let the students know that they were of proud stock and not to take their success for granted.
“We must teach our children that they have a proud legacy and let them know that they, now that the baton has been passed, must succeed. We are so used to success that we take it for granted,” he stated.
Dr. Bryan congratulated the school on its achievements and urged the students to be disciplined in all endeavours. “All of us must play our part to make sure Camperdown and Jamaica remain supreme and we must strive for a higher sense of discipline,” he urged.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, the school will be hosting its first ever track meet, dubbed The Camperdown Classics, on February 12 at Stadium East.
Principal Cynthia Cooke said the meet was borne out of efforts by herself and the former Camperdown track coach and current national coach, Glen Mills, to stage a meet after failing to do so on previous attempts. She thanked all the sponsors especially, 4E, an educational consultancy firm, which sources scholarships for student athletes to attend universities in the United States.
International Athletics Association Federation (IAAF) Area representative, Teddy McCook, expressed his support for the track meet, noting that the event was another venture aimed at enhancing the development of track and field in Jamaica. He further congratulated the school on its achievements over its 75 years of existence and warned against indiscipline.
Other sponsors of the meet include Blue Cross of Jamaica, First Caribbean Bank, Victoria Mutual Building Society (VMBS) and Sports Plus.
