Jamaican Writer to Headline Caribbean Classic Stage and Screen Series

Jamaican born writer, Anthony C. Winkler, will headline the third staging of the Caribbean Classic Stage and Screen Series from April 15 to 21 in New York City.
Produced by the Brooklyn-based Caribbean Cultural Theatre, the series celebrate the artistry of some of the Caribbean’s most illustrious writers and actors from the last Century.
“This multi-faceted programme highlights these writers’ contributions to world literature, explore their role as social commentators and introduce their work to new audiences,” noted E. Wayne McDonald, Artistic Director of the Caribbean Cultural Theatre.
Following last year’s highlight of the work of Jamaican playwright and screenwriter, Trevor Rhone, the 2007 series examine the Caribbean experience as depicted in filmed adaptations of Caribbean literary texts.
While in New York, Mr. Winkler will engage a new generation of writers in discussion on the challenges of their careers and of grappling with the Caribbean identity on page and the silver screen, at sessions to be held at St. John’s University in Queens; Brooklyn Public Library, Central Branch; and Medgar Evers College, Brooklyn.
A major highlight of his New York visit will be the launch of his new book, ‘Dog War’, on Thursday, April 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Jamaican Consulate, Manhattan.Dr. Basil K. Bryan, Consul General of Jamaica will host the event, in collaboration with Akashic Books, an independent publishing company; the American Foundation for the University of the West Indies (AFUWI); Date With A Book; and the Jamaica Information Service (JIS).
