Jamaica to Take Centre Stage at Film Festival in Toronto

Jamaica will be the featured country at this year’s staging of the Caribbean Tales Film Festival set to take place in July in Toronto, Canada.
Jamaica’s Consul General to Toronto, Anne-Marie Bonner, and filmmaker and Artistic Director of Caribbean Tales, Frances-Anne Solomon, made the announcement recently, following the screening of Ms. Solomon’s feature film ‘A Winter Tale’ starring Jamaica’s renowned actress Leonie Forbes.
This is the third year of the film festival, which in 2007, focused on the twin-island republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
Ms. Solomon said that the mandate of Caribbean Tales is to celebrate the rich heritage of the Caribbean and this year, Jamaican documentaries and films will be given centre stage. Plans are in earnest to make sure that the best of Jamaica is showcased at the festival. The Consulate General and Jamaica Trade and Invest are partnering with Caribbean Tales to bring Jamaican films to the Canadian audience.
“We’re hoping to bring a number of persons from Jamaica and we are looking forward to seeing everyone come out to the film festival,” said the Consul General.
In the meantime, Ms. Solomon informed that ‘A Winter Tale’, which has been making waves since it was released last year, will have a Caribbean run, starting in Jamaica in April, then on to Trinidad in May, to be followed by Barbados, Antigua & Barbuda and St. Lucia.
The movie, starring Leonie Forbes and Jamaican/Canadian actor Peter Williams, is set in Toronto and tells the story of a black men’s support group, which begins to meet following the shooting death of a young boy.
