The Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Centre (GTRCMC) will launch a book on tourism resilience, recovery, and global development at World Expo 2020 Dubai on February 17.
The book, titled ‘Tourism Resilience, Recovery and Sustainability for Global Development: Navigating COVID-19 and the Future’, is edited by Executive Director, GTRCMC, Professor Lloyd Waller and Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett.
Speaking with journalists recently, Professor Waller said that the publication will “add value to the ability of various organisations and institutions that are trying to recover from the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, making their recovery faster”.
“It will provide a framework for an understanding of what tourism resilience is and [its] importance for global sustainability,” he said, noting that the book includes case studies, best practices and lessons learned during the pandemic.
He said it also looks at the experiences of different destinations in managing resilience.
“So, for example, Jamaica had the resilience corridors [and] Las Vegas had resilience bubbles. We did a comparative analysis of those destinations that had these different strategies,” he pointed out.
Professor Waller informed that the book also features emerging challenges that the tourism space will have to contend in the future, including cybersecurity and crime, the dark web, and cryptocurrencies.
Emerging options is another key area of focus in the book.
“We looked at how non-fungible tokens (NFT) can be used as a mechanism to advertise destinations, especially among millennials and Generation COVID (Gen C),” he said.
Professor Waller informed that following the soft launch in Dubai, there will a Caribbean launch in Jamaica.
The book, along with other publications, will be tabled in Parliament when Minister Bartlett makes his presentation during the upcoming Budget Debate.
It is already available for purchase on Amazon, and Barnes and Noble.
