Jamaica will be among 24 countries to participate in the twelfth staging of the Caribbean Festival of the Arts (CARIFESTA) set to take place in Haiti August 21-30, 2015, under the theme ‘Our Roots, Our Culture, Our Common Future’.  CARIFESTA is the largest cultural and artistic event in the Caribbean which showcases cultural expressions of artistes across the region.

Minister of Youth and Culture, the Honourable Lisa Hanna states that CARIFESTA has long been a major platform on which Jamaica has had the opportunity to reaffirm its enviable brand as a cultural super power. “We have talented individuals in dance, craft, theatre, music, film and the literary industries, therefore, our participation in CARIFESTA XII will allow us to showcase our nation’s talents on a global scene. Our artistes will be given an opportunity to network and to increase the interest in the nation’s cultural and creative industries,” she said.

She explained that the Ministry of Youth and Culture continues to support any initiative that seeks to highlight Jamaica’s rich cultural heritage, adding that CARIFESTA recognizes the work of artistic individuals across the region and showcases to the world the talents of the Caribbean people.

Jamaica’s delegation to Haiti will include: the National Dance Theatre Company (NDTC), L’Acadco, dBURNZ, Raging Fyah, Storyteller Amina Blackwood-Meeks, craft vendors and representatives from the Ministry of Youth and Culture.

According to Marisa Benain, Director of Cultural Policy and Monitoring in the Ministry of Youth and Culture, “Jamaica’s participation at CARIFESTA XII will seek to reinforce the need for regional integration and camaraderie. It will unmask the talented individuals in Jamaica to the world and provide them with a platform on which their skills and talents will be exhibited.” She added that this event presents yet another opportunity for the international community to experience Jamaica’s rich and exciting cultural offerings.

This year’s activities will include a grand market, book fair, cultural industries trade fair, visual arts festival and exhibition, super concerts and community festivals.

The establishment of the Festival was initiated by the Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community in 1972 to celebrate the arts, foster a vision of Caribbean unity and to positively advance Caribbean culture regionally and internationally.
