Jamaica Receives US$100,000 from the Republic of Korea Towards Hurricane Rebuilding

Jamaica has received a US$100,000 donation from the Republic of Korea to assist with rebuilding measures in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl.

Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Hon. Alando Terrelonge, received the formal confirmation of donation from Charge d’Affaires at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, Jin-wook Kim at the Ministry’s downtown Kingston offices on Wednesday (August 14).

The funds, which have already been transferred to the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), are in response to the damage caused by the hurricane.

Mr. Terrelonge expressed gratitude, noting that the donation is part of a long tradition of friendship and support between the two countries.

He said the Government welcomes “this demonstration of solidarity, during what has been a challenging period for Jamaica, but from which we are determined to build back better and stronger”.

The support, he said, will enhance the prospect for a “timely and effective” recovery, especially for persons and communities most affected by the hurricane.

Noting the strong collaboration between Jamaica and Korea, which was forged over six decades ago with the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1962, Mr. Terrelonge said that the partnership is even greater today.

Mr. Kim, in his remarks, expressed the hope that “our contribution will provide relief from the suffering caused by the hurricane.”

Acting Deputy Director General of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), Michelle Edwards, who was on hand for the presentation, said the support will go a “far way” in the agency’s response to communities, and we “welcome this timely and considerable donation”.
