The Full Story

The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) has named and commissioned Jamaica’s latest maritime asset – His Majesty’s Jamaican Ship (HMJS) Marcus Garvey.

The vessel, a Damen 5009 offshore patrol vessel, is the sixth and final in the current contract with Damen Shipyards, and represents another layer in the country’s maritime security capacity.

Speaking at the ceremony on July 30 at the Port Royal pier, Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, said the ship not only represents a significant enhancement of the country’s maritime capabilities, but also a steadfast commitment to the security and prosperity of Jamaica.

“The impact of this vessel extends beyond national security. It will enhance our search and rescue operations, ensuring the safety of our seafarers and tourists. It will also support our blue economy by combatting illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, thereby protecting the livelihood of our fishermen and preserving our maritime ecosystem,” Mr. Holness said.

He hailed the tremendous contribution of the JDF over the nation’s history since Independence and, most recently, during the onslaught of Hurricane Beryl.

“Our soldiers were on the front line conducting rescue missions, providing humanitarian aid, and rebuilding communities. We saw our brave men and women constructing new homes for those whose houses were completely destroyed by the hurricane. They continue to play a significant role in the recovery and rebuilding efforts and their dedication continues to be instrumental in helping to rebuild our national facilities,” the Prime Minister said.

Furthermore, he maintained that the Government continues to invest in the JDF.

Since 2016, five other vessels have been commissioned for service.

“We’ve also procured aircraft, patrol vessels, radar systems, armoured vehicles, cyber forensic labs and enhanced digital surveillance capabilities as well as expanded the fleet of vehicles of the JDF. These investments represent our Government’s commitment to enhancing Jamaica’s peace, productivity and prosperity,” the Prime Minister said.

In her remarks, Chief of Defence Staff, Vice Admiral Antonette Wemyss-Gorman, outlined that HMJS Marcus Garvey is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and will be manned by a highly trained and dedicated crew.

She also noted that the name Marcus Garvey “resonates deeply within the hearts of Jamaicans”.

“As one of our National Heroes, Marcus Garvey’s legacy of empowerment, unity and resilience continues to inspire generations globally. It is fitting then that this ship, which will serve to protect and safeguard our nation’s waters, bears the name of the man who dedicated his life to the upliftment of his people,” the Vice Admiral said.

“It is my hope that the ship will sail with the spirit of Marcus Garvey and carry his legacy forward as it protects and serves the people of Jamaica. May God bless the ship and all who sail upon her,” she added.
