The Full Story

The 2026 ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships will honour recovery and renewal, while standing as a symbol of national resilience and proof that Jamaica’s young people remain steadfast, hopeful and driven after hardship.

Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Hon. Olivia Grange, made the declaration while addressing the official launch of “Champs” at the National Arena in Kingston, on March 11.

“The number of schools competing this year sadly has been reduced because of the effects of Hurricane Melissa in western Jamaica, but this has not lessened our anticipation,” she stated.

She emphasised that she is proud of the resilience that has been displayed by the nation’s athletes and their support teams.

“Despite Melissa’s cruelty to us, our athletes have displayed the determination and courage that truly defines champions and truly defines Champs. In the face of disruption, they rose to the challenge. Coaches adjusted and found creative ways to continue training. Communities rallied together, parents made sacrifices, and students pushed forward through adversity with determination,” the Minister said.

She further acknowledged the work of ISSA, the schools, coaches, administrators, technical personnel and sponsors who ensure that Champs remains a beacon of excellence.

“Your investment and Government’s investment is helping to mould well-rounded individuals whose lives and light will extend far beyond the track,” Ms. Grange said.

The Sport Minister emphasised that sports in schools contribute to improve academic outcomes, while fostering safer communities, healthier youth and stronger personal development.

“This is why through the Sports Development Foundation we continue to lend support and invest in Jamaica’s robust track season with a total $4.7 million in grants,” she outlined.

Ms. Grange expressed that this year’s staging of Champs will continue to inspire excellence on the track, respect among supporters and a renewed dedication to the Peace for Champs initiative.

The annual championships will take place from March 24 to 28 at the National Stadium and will see over 100 schools and more than 2,000 athletes competing.
