The 47th Port Antonio International Marlin Tournament got underway today (October 11), in Portland, while the 26th local canoe marlin competition will be held on Wednesday, October 13.
Organised by the Sir Henry Morgan Anglin Association, the marlin tournament was officially opened by Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen. It will end on Saturday, October 16.
Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen, declaring open the 47th Port Antonio International Marlin Tournament at the Old Port Antonio Marina, today (October 11).
A total of 35 yachts and 160 anglers are participating in the marlin tournament, while 40 canoes and 120 fishermen will be competing for the prizes in the canoe tournament.
Declaring the tournament open, the Governor-General welcomed the participants to Port Antonio, and expressed the wish that they achieved success in the competition and enjoy their stay in the town.
Pointing out both Lady Allen and himself were lovers of the sport of fishing, he said they were happy to be able to share in the occasion with the organisers and participants, adding that the hospitality of the people of Port Antonio will make them feel at home.
He said that the Port Antonio International Marlin Tournament has blossomed into a major sporting activity over the years, and that the requirement for marlins caught below a certain weight to be released is highly commendable.
