GOJ Hurricane Beryl Relief Efforts

The Government of Jamaica (GOJ) has earmarked more than $1 billion for the restoration and reconstruction of communities that faced significant losses due to the passage of Hurricane Beryl.
Relief efforts are being administered through several ministries, departments and agencies, some of which are listed below.
• Office of the Prime Minister
Relief Emergency Assistance and Community Help (REACH)
The Relief Emergency Assistance and Community Help (REACH) programme assists with food distribution, restoration of utilities, provision of housing, reconstruction support and the restoration of livelihoods.
National Housing Trust (NHT)
NHT mortgagors who were severely affected by Hurricane Beryl and made claims for damage will benefit from peril insurance, moratorium for relief from monthly mortgage payments and special home improvement loans to assist with roof repairs and other structural damage.
• Ministry of Labour and Social Security
Rebuild Jamaica
The Ministry’s Rebuild Jamaica initiative has been assisting with recovery through the distribution of relief packages and emergency grants. Persons whose homes were affected can access up to $50,000 for minor damage, up to $150,000 for severe damage and up to $400,000 for homes that have been destroyed.
Rebuild Jamaica has received international support from the UN World Food Programme, UNICEF and Global Empowerment Mission.
• Ministry of Local Government and Community Development
An allocation of $5 million per constituency was designated for welfare, food, emergency clearing of roads, removal of fallen trees and other recovery activities. An additional $3 million will be distributed to constituencies with severe damage. The Members of Parliament will aid in identifying other critical emergencies for which the funds can be used.
• Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining
The GOJ has dedicated $700 million to the agricultural and fisheries sector that will assist farmers and fisherfolk across the island who were significantly affected by Hurricane Beryl.
