Get the Facts – Electronic Land Registration System
March 11, 2021The Full Story
The Electronic Land Registration System is a project of the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation (MEGJC), Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO), Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ) and the World Bank. The project will run from April 2021 to March 2027. It seeks to enhance the land registration process through:
- The digitisation (conversion to digital format) of all existing land titles. This will allow quicker and easier access to these records.
- Electronic submission of land registration documents. This will eliminate the need for land owners/registrants to visit the National Land Agency (NLA) to carry out registrations.
- Reduction of the cost of land registration. This will be achieved through the reduction of the use of physical documents and the elimination of the need to travel to the NLA.
- Faster processing of land titles, as authentication of registration documents will be done electronically. Additionally, documents can be electronically sent to and received from other government agencies involved in the land titling process, such as Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ).
Additionally, through the project, the Government of Jamaica (GOJ) intends to provide land titles to residents of informal settlements in order to formalise them.
