National Heritage Week

The Full Story

Our heritage is one of the most crucial parts of our identity as Jamaicans. Heritage celebrations help to preserve this identity and our culture, which sets us apart from all other countries.

National Heritage Week is observed annually during the week leading up to the third Monday in October, National Heroes Day. It is being observed from Sunday, October 10 to Heroes Day, Monday, October 18. The theme for Heritage Week 2021 is ‘Saluting Our Heroes … Safeguarding Our Legacy’.

Several activities are planned for the week. These include:

  • Virtual Heritage Week Church Service at Waltham Park New Testament Church, 65 Waltham Park Road on Sunday, October 17, beginning at 9:00 a.m. The event will be broadcast on Jamaica Information Service (JIS) social media pages (Facebook and Twitter).
  • Salute to Our National Heroes (Wreath Laying Ceremony) and virtual Ceremony of Investiture and Presentation of National Awards on Heroes’ Day, Monday, October 18, 2021, at 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. This will be broadcast on the JIS social media pages.

JIS’ Jamaica Magazine will also include Heritage Week features throughout the period. The features focus on National Award recipients, Jamaica’s National Heroes, traditional dances and foods.  On October 18, the programme will present the annual Heroes’ Day messages by the Prime Minister, Opposition Leader and Governor-General. Jamaica Magazine is broadcast on TVJ, CVM, PBCJ, LOVE TV, JNN, CNS, NCU TV, Mello TV and Flow 100. The programme is also available on JIS’ YouTube page.

This year’s celebration will also revolve around everyday heroes – those who contribute to building their communities and helping others in practical ways. Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, The Hon. Olivia Grange encourages Jamaicans to celebrate and show gratitude for the service of persons such as healthcare workers, members of the security forces and teachers.
