Attractive Water Features in Jamaica
March 22, 2022The Full Story
Jamaica is rich in beautiful and diverse natural water resources. These resources serve to excite, heal and even innovate.
The Government of Jamaica (GOJ) through local government initiatives, the Jamaica National Heritage Trust (JNHT) and other public and private entities continue to work to develop and maintain facilities that nurture our natural water flows. Some of the facilities are outlined below.
• Longest Rivers – Jamaica’s longest river is the Rio Minho, in the parish of Clarendon. While the Black River in St. Elizabeth is the longest navigable river, which is a river that is calm and deep enough to allow boats and other vessels to travel through safely.
• Luminous Lagoon – In the parish of Trelawny, ‘Glistening Waters’ is a popular attraction for tourists and locals alike. As shared by the Ministry of Tourism, the lagoon sparkles and glistens at night when disturbed, due to microscopic organisms that produce an eerie glow. The lagoon is said to be the largest and most brilliant of four in the world.
• Mineral Spas – Jamaica’s mineral spas are among the best in the world and are said to have a number of healing properties. As documented by the JNHT, these spas are:
– Bath Mineral Spa – Located in the parish of St. Thomas, this spa produces both hot and cold water to meet the varying needs of its visitors. The spring is rich in sulphur and lime and many make the trip from all over the island due to the promise of the spa’s healing powers, especially for rheumatic ailments and skin diseases. The spring was found in the 1690s by a runaway slave who discovered that the water healed his wounds.
– Milk River Spa –The Milk River Spa is located in Clarendon and the waters are esteemed to cure multiple ailments such physical pain, nerve conditions and liver disorder. The spa’s chemical organisms are greater than many of the best spas in the world. It was also found by a slave whose wounds were quickly healed from the water.
– Rockfort Spa – Located in the booming city of Kingston, this facility provides a welcome escape to its residents and surrounding communities. It is believed to have miraculously appeared after the 1907 earthquake. The spa has similar healing properties as Bath and Milk River.
