Two thousand books are being distributed to Jamaicans by the High Commission of India.
Persons can visit the High Commission, 5 Earl’s Court, Acadia, Kingston 8, to select the books in which they are interested.
The categories of books include English and Hindi literature, governance, international relations, world affairs, history, economy, politics and fiction.
The book initiative, which began on December 21, 2021 will run until January 21, 2022.
High Commissioner of India to Jamaica, His Excellency Rungsung Masakui, told JIS News that each person is allowed to take away 10 books.
He said that about 50 persons have visited the High Commission to collect books since the announcement.
“If everyone comes in and picks up books for himself or herself then we assume that he or she will make use of it and read it,” he added.
The High Commissioner said that a decision was taken to donate the books because of the limited space at the Commission’s library.
“Over the years, it has not been utilised the way it should have been. We thought that rather than keeping the books, maybe we can just donate them to others who are interested,” he argued.
The High Commissioner said that the donation is also a gesture by the Commission “as India celebrates 75 years of Independence”.
India became independent in 1947.
“We thought that it was the right time to give away these books,” the High Commissioner said.
