The Full Story

A 50,000-gallon storage tank, valued at $22 million, has been commissioned in York Town, Clarendon, by the National Water Commission (NWC) to improve service delivery.

The project was completed under the NWC’s Tank and Pump Rehabilitation for Operational Efficiency Improvement Programme.

Six hundred residents of the communities of York Town, Howells Content, Bullards Content, Hopewell, Parnassus, Denbigh Drive, Foga Road and Four Paths Settlement, in Clarendon, are expected to benefit from the project.

Addressing the commissioning ceremony on Thursday (February 16), Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, Senator the Hon. Matthew Samuda, said the project forms part of several interventions to improve service delivery across the island.

“This, no doubt, will go a far way to building water resilience for this community,” the Minister said.

The NWC’s Tank and Pump Rehabilitation for Operational Efficiency Improvement Programme involves 33 tanks, costing approximately $600 million.

Through this programme, the entity will maximise the benefits of the system’s storage within the pumped distribution network and improve energy efficiency of pumping plants, with the aim to reduce energy usage, reduce non-revenue water (NRW) levels and improve service delivery levels and reliability to customers.

Citing the meteorological drought that is currently affecting the island, Minister Samuda said $50 million has been allocated to assist the NWC and the Municipal Corporations to implement a water trucking programme.

This is to last for six weeks and is slated to run up to the end of the 2022/23 Financial Year.

“At a meeting with the Prime Minister late last week, he instructed that an analysis be done to determine areas impacted the greatest by the current lack of rainfall and that we design a trucking programme to support the areas most impacted, in partnership with the NWC and the local authorities,” Senator Samuda said.
