His Imperial Highness, Prince Ermias Sahle-Selassie says he will welcome assistance from Jamaican educators, in the development of the Ethiopian school system.

He cited the strides that Jamaica has made in its education system, and made an appeal for support in this area.

“This nation has made significant increases through its enrolment, the number of teachers, the level of training of its teachers and the number of its textbooks. I encourage educators in Jamaica to consider helping Ethiopia as they are doing their level best to improve (their lives). This is already happening…The people of Ethiopia will rebuild their lives with friends and people of good will,” he stated.

The Prince was addressing members of the public and the Rastafarian community at the Inaugural ‘Haile Selassie I’ Lecture held at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Regional Headquarters on Mona Road in Kingston on April 22.

The event, also featured the reading of the University of the West Indies (UWI) citation, conferred on His Imperial Majesty, Haile Selassie I, with the Doctoral Degree of Laws by the institution in 1966.

The citation was read by Co-chair of the Nyahbinghi Administrative Council, Sister, Mitzie Williams.

Additionally, a photographic exhibition recounting the Emperor’s 1966 State visit to the Caribbean was officially opened by the Prince.

The display entitled ‘The 50th Anniversary Commemorating Emperor Haile Selassie’s 1966 State Visit to Jamaica’ is a pictorial and audio visual representation of the Emperor’s visit to the Caribbean islands: Trinidad and Tobago; Barbados; Jamaica and Haiti.

The exhibition was compiled and mounted by Florida based charity and educational non-profit community outreach organization, Rootz Foundation Incorporated.

It is currently being housed at the UWI’s Regional Headquarters where it will remain until May 19.

The exhibition is open to the public Monday to Friday between the hours of 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is free.
