The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is extending the application deadline and calling on Jamaica and the wider Caribbean to submit their innovative ideas for the seventh Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in the Americas.
Registration reopens on September 5 and will close on the 15th. The Regional Platform will be held virtually November 1 to 4.
The event has taken a different approach due to the global health pandemic. One such change is the addition of the Ideas Incubator, which will allow participants to make meaningful contributions to the Platform. This was previously done through the Ignite Stage at the physical staging of the event.
“We invite all the ideas from Jamaica to apply to be visible. We know that Jamaica has a lot of innovative work and has a lot of projects and activities in disaster risk reduction. So, we are really looking forward to having ideas from Jamaica and for sure from the Caribbean. I encourage youths to apply with their ideas, civil society, community groups, academia and the private sector to have a variety of different voices heard,” UNDRR Regional Office External Relations Officer, Saskia Carusi, told JIS News.
Ideas are welcome, particularly those related to building resilient economies, and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.
Sharing ideas, projects, tools or innovative actions in disaster risk reduction through the Ideas Incubator will effectively publicise and disseminate information on local and regional efforts as the UNDRR is expecting global participation in the Regional Platform.
“We are offering the space of an incubator, which is a space of five minutes in the format of a pre-recorded video, where all the participants will be able to share their ideas. This is the space where they can apply to share their idea and their innovation. The deadline will be extended but not beyond the 15th of September so, please, everybody submit before the 15th of September,” urged the UNDRR Regional Office External Relations Officer.
Once applications are evaluated, 40 ideas will be selected to remotely connect to a virtual studio, where they will record the audio for their five-minute videos for the Platform and receive assistance in producing and editing the overall presentation.
Applications can be made via the Regional Platform’s website at https://rp-americas.undrr.org/ideasincubator. The form takes only a few minutes to complete and must be accompanied by a two-minute video about the idea, project or action. Videos can be recorded from a phone but must have clear audio and must be recorded in natural light and in landscape mode.
