Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Most Hon. Juliet Holness, has been appointed to serve on the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) International Executive Committee as a Representative for the Caribbean, Americas and Atlantic Region.
The appointment took effect at the conclusion of the 68th staging of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) in Barbados from October 5 to 12.
The appointment places Jamaica at the heart of the CPA’s global leadership for the next three years, as the Speaker joins a select group of parliamentarians responsible for shaping policy and advancing parliamentary democracy across more than 180 national and subnational legislatures worldwide.
Mrs. Holness, who is Member of Parliament for St. Andrew East Rural, said that a fulsome report will be provided to the House during its next sitting.
Addressing the recent sitting of the House of Representatives, Deputy House Leader and Minister without Portfolio with responsibility for Works, Hon. Robert Morgan, congratulated Mrs. Holness on her appointment.
“We believe that this marks a proud moment for Jamaica… in this capacity you join an esteemed body of parliamentarians from across the commonwealth entrusted with shaping policies, strengthening democratic institutions and deepening cooperation,” he said.
“I think this is a testament to your commitment to parliamentary excellence and Jamaica’s respected voice in the advancement of democracy and good governance across the Commonwealth,” Mr. Morgan added.
