Members of Parliament of the ruling People’s National Party have unanimously approved Member of Parliament for South West St. Andrew and Minister of Local Government, Community Development and Sport, Portia Simpson Miller to succeed Prime Minister P.J. Patterson.
Making the announcement during Tuesday’s (Feb.28) sitting of the House of Representatives, Prime Minister P.J. Patterson, who will resign shortly, said Governor General, His Excellency Kenneth Hall was to be advised of the designation.
“Everyone was in attendance, unanimously and by acclaim they have authorized me to advise the Governor General that when he comes to make an appointment of my successor the best person able to command the confidence of a majority of the members of this House is the Member of Parliament for South West St. Andrew and Minister of Local Government, Community Development and Sport, Portia Simpson Miller,” Prime Minister Patterson stated.His remarks were followed by that of Opposition Leader Bruce Golding who expressed his congratulations to Mrs. Simpson Miller.
In replying, Mrs. Simpson Miller reiterated her pledge to work in the country’s best interest and expressed gratitude for the support she had received.On February 25, Mrs. Simpson Miller emerged winner of the four-candidate leadership race to become President of the PNP.
