The Homestead Place of Safety in Stony Hill, St. Andrew, received a facelift as part of Labour Day activities yesterday (May 23).

Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Minister, Senator the Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith, joined representatives from the Child Development Agency (CDA) and Scotiabank Foundation in cleaning the dormitories, painting the building, cutting shrubs, and expanding a vegetable garden.

Speaking with JIS News Senator Johnson Smith, said she was happy to contribute to the project, and raise the spirits of the more than 50 female wards of the State residing at the home.

“I wanted to be here to see what it is that I could do to help to beautify the place.  People sometimes do not recognise how important it is to have surroundings that can help uplift your spirits,” Mrs. Johnson Smith said.

She noted that Homestead is doing “very good work in caring for girls, who are going through tough times and putting them back in a state to be stronger and more positive. This is important.”

Meanwhile, Manager of the home, Jean Duhaney, echoed the sentiments expressed by Senator Johnson Smith that the beautification of the facility will bring cheer to the children.

“In any space you operate, if it is dull and gloomy it will make life depressing. This will lift their spirits and their emotional state. With this opportunity, we’re also teaching them the importance of giving back and of caring for each other”, Ms. Duhaney said.

Public Relations and Communications Manager for the CDA, Rochelle Dixon, told JIS News that Homestead is among 15 children’s homes and places of safety to receive beautification work on Labour Day.

The facilities were chosen based on their level of need. Homestead Place of Safety is a major activity for the CDA Kingston office.

Paint was provided by EdgeChem and labour by volunteers from the Scotiabank Foundation.

Labour Day 2016 is being observed under the theme: ‘For Health’s Sake…Keep it Clean’.
