High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Gail Mathurin begins her official visits to Jamaican communities across the UK on July 7, visiting Preston in the north of England.
The High Commissioner will speak at a meeting of the Jamaican community at the JALGO Sports and Social Club at 7:00 p.m. In addition, she will meet with civic and community leaders in Preston.
Her official visit to Birmingham takes place on July 15 and 16.
Miss Mathurin will also address a community meeting at the Council House, Birmingham City Council. During the visit, the High Commissioner will meet with the Birmingham Black Business group – 3B’s. She will also visit a school and again meet with civic and community leaders.
Miss Mathurin will be in Leeds on July 22 and 23. She will be the guest speaker at the Jamaica Society Leeds annual charity fundraising ball at the Banqueting Suite, Civic Hall Leeds.
Shortly after taking up duties in the UK in April, the High Commissioner had announced plans to visit, before the end of the year, all the major communities across the United Kingdom where Jamaicans reside.
Miss Mathurin said she was looking forward to working with the Jamaican community to deepen the social, economical and cultural links.
“With the recent launch of the Jamaican Diaspora UK and the observation of the first Jamaican Diaspora Day, I think the relationship between Jamaicans overseas and their homeland is moving into a new dynamic phase. Jamaicans in the UK have always displayed deep commitment and loyalty, so one of the mandates of the High Commission is that we provide them with a high standard of service. Meeting with the community will assist us in tailoring our services to meet their needs,” the High Commissioner said.
She will also be seeking to encourage UK based Jamaicans to use their political, economic and social clout to influence changes that will benefit Jamaicans in the UK and Jamaicans at home.
