The Full Story

The Southern Regional Health Authority (SRHA) will host an event on December 5 to assist healthcare workers to replace critical documents, at the Newell Health Centre, in St. Elizabeth.

More than 600 healthcare workers in the SRHA (Clarendon, Manchester and St. Elizabeth) were impacted directly by the recent Category Five Hurricane Melissa, which damaged their properties, houses, vehicles, and “other things”, according to Regional Director, Michael Bent.

He noted that agencies to offer services at Friday’s event are Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ); the Passport, Immigration, and Citizenship Agency (PICA); National Housing Trust (NHT), and National Land Agency (NLA).

“Staff members can come and apply, and we will be processing their applications for replacement documents. We expect to have at least 300 staff members throughout the region who can come and start the process of getting back their documents that they lost during the hurricane,” Mr. Bent said, in an interview with JIS News.

He noted that several things are being done to help the workers recover, including psychosocial support.

The Director also reported that a field hospital donated by Samaritan’s Purse will be transferred to the management of the Black River Hospital, and they “will take possession and operate”.

“Training is ongoing with my local maintenance persons. We will be training two cohorts in terms of how to operate the specialised equipment. We have mobile clinics, where we utilise some of our buses within the region and go into the communities with the staff and the medical team,” he said.

Mr. Bent said that repairs to health centres have commenced, and they are working to complete them by the end of January next year.

The SRHA is an agency under the Ministry of Health and Wellness and is responsible for delivering healthcare services to residents across the three parishes.
