The Full Story

The HEART/NSTA Trust is strengthening its commitment to youth empowerment and workforce development through the Skills Training for Workforce Development initiative.

Administered under the Jamaica National Service Corps (JNSC) and in partnership with the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) and the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ), the programme aims to prepare Jamaica’s youth for meaningful employment and contribute to the nation’s economic growth.

It was piloted on February 24, with 50 young people, ages 18 to 23, targeted for training over eight months.

It includes four months of personal development and life skills training, followed by four months of hands-on industry internships in Business Administration and Electrical Installation.

Speaking at a recent Jamaica Information Service (JIS) Think Tank, Director of Community Engagement at HEART, Ronique Rhoden, said the programme signifies a collective commitment to youth empowerment, workforce development, and skills enhancement.

“Both the JDF and HEART/NSTA Trust have worked together for years, engaging youth through various programmes that focus on preparing them for the workforce,” she said.

“This collaboration allows us to focus on building well-rounded youth, ready to contribute to Jamaica’s workforce. The exposure to the world of work, along with the opportunity to earn certification, is an invaluable experience for these young people,” she informed.

The initiative also focuses on discipline, civic responsibility, integrity, and professionalism, with the JDF playing a key role in reinforcing these values.

Additionally, participants receive a stipend during their training, increasing accessibility and support for their career development.

Ms. Rhoden expressed gratitude to the PSOJ for its support and encouraged more organisations to provide placement opportunities for young people.

She emphasised the importance of soft skills, noting that they are essential for success across industries.
