The Full Story

Secretary of Public Health in the Philippines, Dr. Teodoro J. Herbosa, has hailed healthcare as a noble profession that transcends borders, uplifts lives, and offers opportunity to leave an indelible mark on the world.

He said that professionals in the sector possess a unique blend of intellect and compassion, with a deep understanding of science and a strong commitment to service.
“Beyond the science and the skill, what truly sets the healthcare profession apart is the profound impact it has on people’s lives. The COVID-19 pandemic showed us the importance of the health workforce. They are indeed the

backbone of our societies, who keep us healthy and safe in times of peace and crisis,” he said.

Dr. Herbosa was addressing the opening ceremony of the Ministry of Health and Wellness’ two-day Career Expo and Employment Fair at the University of the West Indies (UWI) in St. Andrew on Wednesday (January 22).

Hundreds of persons gathered on the Mona campus for the event, with many of them armed with their résumés for on-the-stop interviews to secure jobs in the health sector.

Over the two days of the event, the Ministry is looking to recruit persons to fill some 600 vacancies in public health facilities across the island.

Dr. Herbosa said he was happy to see the young jobseekers in attendance, noting that their interest in the profession augurs well for the future of world health.

“Your decision to enter this noble profession will not only shape your own future but will also have a profound and lasting effect on the world,” he pointed out.

“The health workforce is not just a statistic or a number; it is the heart of our health systems. You are the future of our society. You hold the potential to shape the world in ways we can only begin to imagine,” he added.

To policy makers, Dr. Herbosa said, “The future of global health and our respective health systems depend on how we treat and invest in those who care for us. As policymakers and decision-makers, you have the power to shape this future.”

The Career Expo and Employment Fair ends today at 8:00 p.m.
