The Full Story

Inter-Agency Reproductive Health (IARH) and Dignity Kits that were designed to support maternal, newborn, and personal health services across Jamaica have been officially handed over to the Ministry of Health and Wellness.

The items include four IARH Kit 6A, containing medical equipment for regular deliveries; four IARH Kit 6B, with medicines and disposables for regular deliveries; four IARH Kit 11A, equipped with medical instruments for surgical interventions; and two IARH Kit 11B, containing medicines and disposables for surgical procedures.

Medical equipment donated to the Ministry of Health and Wellness during the Inter-Agency Reproductive Health (IARH) Kits and Dignity Kits handover ceremony on Wednesday (April 1) at the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Warehouse in downtown Kingston.

The donation also comprises 1,000 dignity kits, five high-performance 24-square-metre tents, five solar lighting kits to support the tents, and three solar direct-drive refrigerators.

The dignity kits handed over to the Ministry of Health and Wellness during the Inter-Agency Reproductive Health (IARH) Kits and Dignity Kits ceremony on Wednesday (April 1) at the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Warehouse in downtown Kingston.

Supported by funding from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), the effort strengthens Jamaica’s post-hurricane recovery by enhancing the capacity of doctors, nurses, and midwives in affected parishes, including St. Elizabeth, Westmoreland, Manchester, and St. James, ensuring the continuity of essential maternal and newborn health services.

It also reinforces the Government’s commitment to protecting the health and dignity of vulnerable communities while addressing their immediate needs.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) supported UNFPA and partners in reaching vulnerable women and girls, while also providing technical guidance to strengthen coordination and maternal health service delivery.

The supplies were handed over on Wednesday (April 1) at the UNFPA Warehouse in downtown Kingston.

State Minister in the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Hon. Krystal Lee, emphasised the vital role of partnerships in strengthening Jamaica’s health response following the devastating impact of Hurricane Melissa.

“We, here at the Ministry, value our partnerships very much. We were only able to be as strong as we are because we did not stand alone,” she said.

Ms. Lee noted that the reproductive health kits will help ensure women can continue to give birth safely even in times of crisis, while also supporting emergency obstetric and surgical interventions where needed.

She further highlighted that the dignity kits (containing essential hygiene and menstrual health items) are critical in meeting the immediate needs of women and girls displaced or otherwise impacted by the hurricane.

“While these kits provide essential hygiene items, they also offer something else just as important… a sense of dignity, safety, and care,” Ms. Lee said.

The State Minister highlighted that more than 500 pregnant and lactating mothers have already benefited from targeted outreach interventions in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, receiving health checks, counselling, and ultrasound services.

Principal Director in the Bureau of Gender Affairs (BGA), Sharon Coburn Robinson, emphasised that the initiative extends beyond the distribution of supplies, serving as part of a broader support system for vulnerable groups.

She noted that coordinated efforts among partners are essential to delivering, not only hygiene kits but also psychosocial support, counselling, and services related to sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Mrs. Coburn Robinson also underscored the importance of ensuring inclusive support for families, explaining that interventions have evolved to address the needs of men and boys alongside women and girls, including the provision of appropriate hygiene solutions and household support.

“For some men… they also wanted to know, ‘Are we getting anything for ourselves that is male specific?’ So that conversation happened… and what we can get is a dedicated hygiene kit,” the Principal Director further stated.

She explained that the hygiene kits complement the dignity kits, providing more inclusive support for entire households.

Mrs. Coburn Robinson added that the handover reflects a deeper level of investment and understanding by partners, aimed at addressing the realities faced by affected communities, particularly in rebuilding lives and restoring a sense of normalcy after disaster.

For his part, UNFPA Director and Representative, Harold Robinson, noted that the initiative reflects the unified response of United Nations agencies working in partnership with the Government.

He underscored that reproductive healthcare remains a fundamental right, especially during emergencies when vulnerabilities are heightened.

Mr. Robinson further noted that UNFPA continues to play a leading role in addressing sexual and reproductive health needs, while also working to prevent gender-based violence, which often rises during crises.
