The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) in Hanover will host a community fitness event in Hopewell on Saturday, April 11, aimed at promoting wellness while strengthening ties between residents and the police.
The event, dubbed Rise and Move – Hanover Soca Aerobics, is scheduled to begin at 6:30 a.m. at the Hopewell Community and Sports Centre. Admission is free.
Speaking to JIS News, Divisional Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator for Hanover, Corporal Monique Bartley, said the initiative is designed as a creative means of engaging citizens, while promoting healthy living.
“So, what we’re doing is promoting health, wellness, and an active lifestyle within the Hopewell community through this engaging high-spirited Soca Aerobics,” she said.
She informed that the session is expected to draw participants from several communities, including MacQuarrie, Welcome, Pond Piece, Orchard Housing Scheme, Orchard Gardens and neighbouring areas.
Corporal Bartley said that the event is intended to support broader police-community engagement and help build interest in the Neighbourhood Watch movement.
“We have done a great job of doing a rebranding of the mindset of residents concerning the Neighborhood Watch,” she pointed out.
Corporal Bartley said the event is being organised in partnership with the Social Development Commission (SDC) and Jamaica Moves under the Ministry of Health and Wellness.
“It’s something that the Ministry of Health is pushing. So, we’re joining forces on the side of security,” she said.
The aerobics session forms part of a wider community engagement push by the Hanover Police Division, through which officers hope to create more opportunities for interaction with residents in a positive setting while reinforcing the message of shared responsibility for safer communities.
