Government Senator, Dr. Sapphire Longmore, is encouraging Jamaicans to show greater compassion towards persons experiencing mental health challenges, which she notes, have become more prevalent across the society.

Dr. Longmore emphasised the importance of understanding and supporting individuals struggling with these issues while highlighting the potential adverse effects, particularly on young people.

She was speaking during a mental health forum at the Jewel Grande Resort in Montego Bay on May 30.

Dr. Longmore, a psychiatrist, also expressed concern about the stigma attached to mental health, noting that the issues arising are real and can have significant consequences if not addressed with care and compassion.

“The stigma surrounding mental health can worsen the situation and prevent individuals from seeking the help they need; it is [a clear and present danger], especially among young people in our society. Mental health and the care of the mental capacity of our people are paramount. There is no good health without good mental health,” she maintained.

“It is crucial that we approach mental health issues with empathy, understanding, and support. By fostering a culture of compassion, we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment for those facing mental health challenges,” the Government Senator further stated.

Consequently, Dr. Longmore is calling on community leaders, policymakers and members of the public to prioritise mental health awareness and support initiatives to address these.

The Government Senator underscored the importance of de-stigmatising mental health issues and creating safe spaces for individuals to seek help without fear of judgment or discrimination.

Dr. Longmore further emphasised the importance of maintaining the spotlight on mental health awareness and support in schools and the wider society, which she said “serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of prioritising mental well-being in our communities”.
