Eight-five residents of Gravel Heights in St. Catherine are now proud landowners having received the titles to the property that they occupy from the Housing Agency of Jamaica (HAJ).

The residents, some of whom have been living in the area since the 1970s, received the instruments on Friday, December 13, during a ceremony held at the Redemption National Church of God in the community.

The handing over was part of continued efforts by the HAJ to deliver full ownership of land titles to thousands of residents across the island.

Minister with Responsibility for Housing, Hon. Dr. Morais Guy, in his remarks at the function, said that the Government will be working with the residents to develop the infrastructure in the area.

He urged them to pay their property tax, which finances the cleaning of drains and collection of waste.

Member of Parliament for Eastern St. Catherine, Denise Daley, said that with the titles, residents are now empowered to make important decisions to improve their lives.

She however cautioned them that “while you can use your titles for various purposes, you must make sure that whatever you do you are mindful that you make the right choices and not run the risk of losing your land.”

Councillor for the Lauriston Division, Keisha Lewis, told the residents that “you are sitting on prime land…and you only have to develop it in your own little way. We will work along with you so that Gravel Heights becomes the community that you have envisioned”.

In order to minimize the cost to the residents, the HAJ undertook the planning and design, and provided technical and administrative support of the development, which sits on 80 acres of land. The final price of the land only included legal and other professional fees.
