The Full Story

Jamaicans in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will be able to see the sights and sounds of the grand gala at the National Stadium as the event will be streamed live to the Olympic village.

Some 1,000 performers will participate in the August 6 event in celebration of the country’s 54th year of Independence under the theme ‘Let’s get together and feel alright’.

Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Hon. Olivia Grange, said the streaming of the event to Brazil will enable the athletes and supporters to be part of the celebrations at home.

“We will use technology to communicate with them (the athletes) and to wish them well from the National Stadium and they will, in turn, be able to view what we’re doing and share in that wonderful experience,” she said.

Minister Grange noted that the grand gala, under the theme ‘Youth Arising’, will showcase the energy, vibrancy and dynamism of Jamaica’s young people.

“It will have various segments, including youth in education, youth in technology and youth as creators of significant cultural expressions,” she pointed out.

There will be a special segment on the Rastafarian culture featuring Capleton and the Mystic Revelations of Rastafari.

Other sections include Generation Gap with Oliver Samuels and Ity and Fancy Cat; When We Were Young, featuring the Dragonaires with Morvin Brooks and Nazzleman; and City Slickers with G-Whizz, Gyptian and Romaine Virgo.

“It is a great time for us to just let our hair down and enjoy while we reflect on our greatness as a little nation,” Minister Grange
