The Full Story

The Government will be moving to close the sewage disposal facility in Greenwich Farm, Kingston, which has long been a source of concern for residents.

This was disclosed by Minister of Water, Environment and Climate Change, Hon. Matthew Samuda, during his contribution to the 2026/27 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on Tuesday (April 28).

He noted that the Greenwich Farm facility has, for years, negatively affected the surrounding community, including nearby schools.

As such, the Minister advised that construction works to facilitate the closure are expected to commence within the current fiscal year.

Meanwhile, Mr. Samuda informed the House that the design process has commenced for relocating the Greater Portmore Sewage Plant, alongside plans to sewer several Portmore communities in

St. Catherine affected by inadequate wastewater infrastructure.

Regarding broader water infrastructure development, the Minister outlined a series of completed and upcoming projects under Rural Water Supply Limited (RWSL).

He reported that during the last financial year, RWSL completed projects in communities such as Rocky Point, Brandon Hill, Bunkers Hill, the Mother Fleure system in Manchester, New Eden and Cascade in Portland, Top Road in St. Andrew East Rural, Freehill in St. Ann North Western, Watermount Phase II in St. Catherine, and Lapland in St. James.

Works were also undertaken at several schools, including New Gardens Primary, Aberdeen High, Mason Hall Primary, and Ridgeland Primary.

According to the Minister, more than $450 million was spent in the last fiscal year to complete these projects.

Looking ahead, Mr. Samuda stated that additional capital works will commence this fiscal year in several communities, including Albert Town and Ulster Spring in Trelawny, Green Park to Bamboo Line in St. Ann, and Mason Hall in St. Mary.

He indicated that the upcoming projects represent an investment of US$36 million.
