Prime Minister the Hon. Bruce Golding has said that the government will be assisting the 50 vendors who lost goods in the fire at the Oxford Mall in downtown Kingston, on Tuesday, October 27.
Mr. Golding made the announcement during his monthly ‘Jamaica House Live’ call in programme, on Wednesday, October 28.
“We can’t replace what they have lost, but we do feel that we have a duty to see how we can help them and put in some structures there for them and we are going to try to help them get back on their feet. That’s what governments are there for, to assist people when they are in distress and we are going to see how we can help them,” Mr. Golding said.
The fire at the market started at about 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning. No one sustained injuries and the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
The Oxford Mall was among several markets refurbished at a cost of $20 million in November 2001.
