The Government continues to expand support services for vulnerable women through a network of shelters and transitional housing facilities.
Addressing the Standing Finance Committee of the House of Representatives during its examination of the 2026/27 Estimates of Expenditure at Gordon House on March 6, Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Hon. Olivia Grange, reported that two shelters are currently in operation, providing immediate protection for women in need, while work continues to bring a third facility into service.
She indicated that the opening of the third shelter has been delayed due to the impact of Hurricane Melissa.
The Minister further noted that the facility will also serve as a transition house for women who have been removed from abusive environments but are not yet ready to return to independent living.
“So we will provide them with that space for them to stabilise and then move into a normal environment,” the Minister added.
Ms. Grange highlighted the role of the Jamaica Network of Rural Women Producers (JNRWP), noting that the organisation operates islandwide and provides support to women in rural communities who face social challenges and stigma.
She advised that women can access assistance through a dedicated helpline, which activates the network to relocate individuals from unsafe environments into protected spaces.
“If a woman finds herself in a situation where she needs help, the network is activated and we move her out of danger into a safe place,” the Minister stated.
Ms. Grange further noted that the network was activated in western Jamaica following the passage of Hurricane Melissa, providing assistance to women who were affected by the Category-Five system.
Persons in need of assistance may call 876-553-0372 or 876-236-1713 for support.
