Minister of Education, Youth and Information, Senator the Hon. Ruel Reid, says the Government remains focused on ensuring that schools are able to meet their financial obligations.
The Minister was speaking at the 25th Annual Carlton Alexander Award Dinner held on June 15 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel.
Senator Reid said the Ministry is committed to ensuring that there is an equitable division between school and auxiliary fee costs.
“I am going to make sure that we give schools as much resources as the Government can give and then we will ask parents to make additional contribution. We can’t go back to a situation where we set fees so high that the average person cannot comply,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mr. Reid congratulated the 2016 recipients of the prestigious award, Managing Director/Senior Project Manager, Asphaltic Concrete Enterprise Limited, Patrick Gordon, and Chairman and Managing Director, the Palace Amusement Company Limited, Douglas Graham.
Since 1990, the Carlton Alexander Award has been conferred on Jamaica College (JC) alumni who have made outstanding contributions to the school and to national development.
The award was named after the late Dr. the Hon. Selwyn Carlton Murray Alexander. He is credited with playing a leading role in the business sector which has had a positive impact on national development.
In his acceptance of the award, Mr. Gordon expressed his gratitude to the JC Old Boys’ Association and the family of Dr. Carlton Alexander for selecting him for the honour.
“To have my name associated with Dr. Carlton Alexander is an honour that I am truly proud of. I have been able to give back in some small measure to the school that played the most vital role in determining the person that I am today,” he said.
Fellow recipient, Douglas Graham, echoed similar sentiments, while encouraging the old boys association to assist in the continued legacy of producing leaders from among the young men enrolled at the institution.
“Let us as old boys help JC to produce leaders in all the professions of Jamaica,” he said.
