The Full Story

The Government will be launching an initiative to improve water supplied to schools and health centres across Trelawny Southern.

This is in response to ongoing water challenges being experienced in the parish, according to Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, Senator the Hon. Matthew Samuda.

He indicated that three 5,000-gallon water storage systems will be installed at three educational institutions in the region – Wait-A-Bit All-Age School, Daniel Town Primary School, and Stewart Town Primary and Infant School.

“This will give the schools a minimum three days of additional storage for each of them,” Minister Samuda pointed out, while addressing a community meeting in Jackson Town, Trelawny, on Monday (August 19).

He advised that this will reduce the likelihood of the schools’ closure due to water shortage.

Senator Samuda underscored that the undertaking will commence with Stewart Town Primary, which also benefited from a rainwater harvesting system to bring their storage capacity up to 20,000 gallons.

He further informed that Rural Water Supply Limited will conduct assessments to evaluate the current storage capacities of health centres in Trelawny Southern.

Senator Samuda said, based on the findings, the Government plans to implement a two-week water-storage system and introduce rainwater harvesting solutions at each centre.

“We want to ensure that every health centre is able to open all the time, without any water disruptions,” he indicated.
